I've caught it. Fortunately, it's not treatable.

Sleep Experiment Trial 5

Hi there!

So, unfortunately, for now at least, this will be the last trial. My sister is visiting me tomorrow and I won’t be able to continue because I don’t want to be focused on the posts when I only have 4 days with my sister in Madrid! I will go back to the final 2 trials though!

Overall, last night’s method of tensing and releasing each major muscle group one by one did help me relax and I did get to sleep within (what I deem) a reasonable length of time BUT yoga is still winning; I felt so refreshed after yoga!

Overall score for muscle tightening and releasing; 6/10

Family visits tomorrow so will be quiet over the weekend! I fully intend to indulge this weekend also! (Yippee!)

Have a great weekend and keep going!

Sleep Experiment Trial 4

Hi there!

So I tried a yoga routine prior to falling asleep to see if it would help me get to sleep quicker and surprisingly I felt like it did! I went to bed much more relaxed and calm and my body felt heavy and ready to sleep. I slept pretty quick and slept soundly until I had to go to the bathroom!

Rating for yoga before sleeping; 8/10

YIPPEE a potential solution has been found. However, tonight I shall try and use a technique whereby I tighten muscle groups and release them slowing starting from my toes!

Until tomorrow!

Sleep Experiment Trial 3

Hi there!

Last night’s option for the Sleep Experiment did not work at all. I had to follow the following breathing exercise;

  1. Breath in deeply for 4 counts
  2. Hold breath for 2 counts
  3. Exhale for 4 counts, gently forcing the last bit of air out at the end
  4. Repeat and focus on breathing, clearing your mind of all else.

I found myself focusing on how tired it was making me and trying to become aware of when I was falling asleep so I was hideously distracted. I eventually gave up and just there waiting for sleep to come. It took a while. When I finally got to sleep I slept pretty soundly but the whole process of getting to sleep was not improved via this method, for me at aleast.

Rating for the breathing execises; 3/10.

I’m going to give the yoga a try tonight! Fingers crossed!

Sleep Experiment Trial 2

Hi there!

Continuing on discussing the Sleep Experiment, I attempted option number 3 on my list; no screens 30 minutes prior to going to sleep. This was slightly unusual for me, unfortunately I will typically be on my laptop until the very end and then listen to music. I literally follow this pattern;

Bed Time Screen Joke

Just replace the phone with my iPod…

It’s not a briliiant way to wind down, according to some friends of mine. However, I do find music relaxing, but last nights experiment trial proved to me that maybe it’s not the most efficient way of getting to sleep.

Last night I turned my laptop off, got ready for bed, brushed my teeth etc. then read my book; Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance by Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Which is a book about how Mr. Gerstner turned mega-business IBM aroud after near collapse. It’s a business book I’m reading to try and spread my literary horions beyond Game of Thrones, Harry Potter and the Hunger Games. I quite like it, I’m finding it pretty motivating because I’m abl to understand the more business-oritented language and understand the concepts and why he made certain decisions.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand; did it help me sleep? Whilst it still took me 20-30 minutes to get to sleep, it was quicker than Trial 1 and my quality of sleep wa significantly better. I still get up once or twice to go to the bathroom because I consume a fair bit of water throughout the day and at night (the air can get really dry in my room here in Madrid) but overall I felt a lot better when I woke up to go to the gym!

Therefor, I’m going to rate this option at 7/10!

Tonight I am going to give option 5 a go; using a specific breathing routine.

On another note, I have signed up for the Edinburgh 10k on Saturday 30th May with my family! I reckon anyone who is free should give it a go, or there’s a 5k option, Marathon and Half Marathon. Younger enthusiastists can also get involved and run shorter distances! Check out Edinburgh Marathon Festival for more information! It’s all in support of MacMillan Cancer! I’ll do a more detailed post about this great event after my Sleep Experiment is complete!

Sleep Experiment Trial 1

Hi there!

This will be a quick update on the Sleep Experiment! I opted for option 7, listening to music. Overall, I slept relatively quickly, but not as quickly as I would have liked. I am actually quite tired today and did not sleep soundly.

Rating for listening to music before bed; 5/10.

Tonight’s experimental method will be number 3; avoid any screens for 30 minutes before bed!

Until tomorrow!

Getting to sleep; An experiment

Hi there!

So, last night as I lay in bed wide awake at 2:30am, fully aware of my 8am alarm I got an idea for a new experiment. I am going to try, for the next week, 7 different methods to fall asleep quicker that I have found on the internet. I will report back everyday with whichever one I have tried the previous evening and let you know how it went. Why am I doing this? Because I struggle to sleep more often than I’d like and sleep is key to a healthy lifestyle. I also imagine I’m not the only one who struggles to get to sleep!

Here are my 7 sleep remedies;

  1. A 10-minute yoga routine from Greatist.
  2. Inhale through my left nostril (this seems absurd) from the author of Sleep Better With Natural Therapies.
  3. Avoid any screens (laptops, phones, tablets, TV) 30-minutes before bed.
  4. Loosen my muscles, group by group from WikiHow.
  5. Follow a specific breathing routine, again from WikiHow.
  6. Count sheep.
  7. Listen to music.

I will go through each of these, starting with number 1 tonight (February 27th) and shall update you tomorrow on how it went! I’ll tag each relevant post with SleepExperiment to keep track in my archives.
